Our Art HouseBuilt for Looking,
Learning, and Returning
For more than 120 years, we have cared for art across eras while giving New York an open, thoughtful place to encounter it.
A Public Collection With Room to Grow
Halcyon Ridge opened in 1904 with a belief that meaningful encounters with art should be part of everyday city life. Two borrowed rooms above a bookshop grew into fourteen galleries, a courtyard garden, and a rooftop terrace. The scale changed; the welcome did not. Curious visitors belong here, and children under twelve continue to enter free.
The collection spans five millennia, yet every room is arranged for the present: ancient objects meet work by living artists, energetic displays sit beside quiet ones, and benches invite a second look.

Three Chapters in a Growing Museum
Opening the First Doors
A bookseller’s gift of 300 classical objects establishes a public art house with free admission on two days each week.
Making Space for Modernism
Postwar gifts of abstract painting double the holdings and lead to the creation of the skylit upper galleries.
Expanding the Conversation
Murals, generative media, and family studios join marble and oil as annual attendance grows to 640,000 visits.
Every Visitor Deserves
a Way Into the Work
Free school visits, pay-what-you-wish Fridays, sign-interpreted tours, and plain-language labels make access part of the everyday visitor experience.
Find us at 123 Art Street, open every day from 10 AM to 6 PM. Drop in briefly or make a day of it.
